以發生時間來看，這詩篇是比爾博（Bilbo）從灰港（Grey Havens）搭船離開中土之前寫的，可是托爾金從未將它放進魔戒書中（因為它是在魔戒出書後才完成的）。英國 BBC 廣播劇 1981 年播出時將它放在結尾，比爾博一行人在樹林中和弗羅多會合前往灰港的半途，由比爾博輕聲歌唱，依依離情，觸動聽眾的心。BBC 廣播劇這首歌由 Stephen Oliver 作曲，風格和 Donald Swann 不同，各位不妨比較看看。歌詞分三段，歌曲因為三段都差不多，所以 mid 只編一段，而且沒有伴奏。

一如初創的 Arda 是平面的，第二紀努曼諾爾島沉沒後“Downfall of Numenor”，Arda 世界被折彎（Bend）成球形，維拉與精靈所居住的不死之地維林諾移往世界外，人類不再有機會乘船前往，但仍有一條“筆直航道”開放給精靈前往西方。所以這裡用“ever-bending sky”表示我們現在所看見的彎曲的天空。
這首詩在托爾金迷之間有兩種不同的評價。有人認為以比爾博的才能，在他告別中土的最後時刻，不該只拿得得出這麼單純，好像給小孩看的簡單作品，應該能寫出更有技巧的成果，至少也該與魔戒書中出現的那些詩篇相若。並不是說這詩不好，只是出自比爾博之手的告別作應該更精彩才對。
但有一點要考慮的，當比爾博前往西方時他已 131 歲，接近人生終點，精神也像老人般渙散，不時低頭打瞌睡。捨棄魔戒之後他老化很快，甚至連那本紅皮書都寫不了幾頁，要靠弗羅多代筆完成，怎麼可能再寫出先前那樣需要技巧的複雜作品？寫這最後詩篇時他等於返璞歸真，回復到哈比人快樂單純的天性，就像這篇詩的用語一樣簡樸，一樣平實。因此有的托爾金迷認為這篇是傑作，以最簡單的文字傳達最豐富的感情，絲毫不差的表達他的心境與狀況。
